Gum arabic is one of the main process materials for lithography techniques, from traditional stone and plate to paper litho and SmartPlate. Derived from Acacia tree sap, this shelf-stable powder is mixed with water prior to use, preferably in small batches.
[Please note that the cost of gum arabic may vary wildly according to global supply and demand. Our listed price is always based on projected re-stock costs.]
Gum Arabic is prepared by steeping in water. Prepare at least one day before it is needed to allow complete dissolution, especially with larger batches. Using a container with a cover, begin with the measure of water and float the powdered gum on the surface. This allows the dissolving gum to disperse downward without trapping dry pockets in air bubbles. If not fully dissolved by the next day, stir the solution and pop any air pockets with dry gum inside.
Ratio for traditional lithography at 14° Baumé:
365g Gum Arabic to 1000g (mL) Water
Ratio for most polyester plate applications (where dilute gum is acceptable):
By weight: 225g Gum Arabic to 1000g (mL) Water
By volume: roughly 3 parts Gum Arabic to 7 parts Water
